Aaron has a ¾-acre lot at his home that he uses for a wood lot and has room for about 400 ‘face’ cords of firewood stacked on it. Besides his Bobcat S250 skid steer and Halverson Wood Products attachment, he still has the Timberwolf if he needs it, an American CLS conveyor he keeps at the Timberwolf, and a Ford F-350 truck for making deliveries with a Big Tex dump trailer.
On top of its commercial-grade configurability, the CV Series was also designed with comfort, safety and drivability in mind.
And a lot more is about to happen. The company, which acquired Timberwolf, another manufacturer of firewood equipment, will go forward this year marketing and selling its products under the Timberwolf brand name. And it expects to bring three new products to market in the first quarter of the new year.
Time is money in the firewood business, said Scott Baylor, Woods’ product manager for log splitters, and the company’s new machine “will split wood six times faster than a conventional hydraulic unit and consume less fuel as well.”
Blaney maintains that he followed safety protocols during the moments leading up to the incident. He said his co-workers at Triple Crown Tree Co. saved his life.
This is essential to optimize the carbon footprint of a real tree. Grinding used Christmas trees and using them for mulch returns organic matter to the soil, and can contribute to building soil carbon. Many public works departments across the United States routinely collect and chip used Christmas trees after the holidays. If local tree recycling is not available, trees can be chipped and added to compost piles. They also can be placed in backyards or ponds to provide bird or fish habitat.
After the economy nosedived in 2008-09 and the Great Recession took hold, sawmills shut down, and with it loggers and the supply of logs. Timmins acquired a logging business to keep the firewood company supplied with wood. Then they began supplying packaged firewood to companies like Kroger and Tractor Supply on a national basis. Together, they operated the firewood business and then they added logging operations for about 7-8 years.
Twenty-four employees work with Gordon to keep the many components of JFP humming. (Vice President of Finance and Marketing at JFP Valerie Sundberg, was very helpful to us in gathering comments for this article – doing so during the exceptionally busy early March period when mulch production and transport were gearing up to full speed.)
Life cycle assessments often will also estimate a system’s carbon footprint. Fuel use is the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Christmas tree production. Using 1 gallon of gas or diesel to power a tractor or delivery truck releases 20 to 22 pounds (9 to 10 kilograms) of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
“The operator is getting comfortable with the unit and there’s no question productivity is up,” Raschen said. “We’re getting more done than we did the other way and one man is doing more than what three men did.”
“Love it,” said Aaron. “It is absolutely the best job in the world. The schedule is amazing, the people are great, and you’re able to help the community.” And he likes the job security of working for a local government.
